It's been happening for decades. And the ones who return? They always come back with stories.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey'd talk about the winters that lasted forever, the way strangers would invite you in for tea, the superstitions many of their landladies still believed in — don't whistle indoors, don't shake hands across a doorway, leave a little food out for... something. They'd laugh about it, but you could tell it had gotten under their skin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne friend told me about an old woman in Kyiv who sat her down at a kitchen table and read her fortune with a regular deck of playing cards. 36 cards, nothing fancy. She laid them out in a cross pattern, told my friend she'd get her degree but wouldn't practice in the country she expected, and that there was a man she needed to stop trusting. My friend laughed it off. Both things turned out to be true.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I looked into it later, I found out this is called gadanie. It's one of the oldest divination traditions in the Slavic world. Grandmothers have been reading with those 36 cards for centuries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am on the spectrum, so when a subject hooks me, I completely obsess over it. The more I researched gadanie, the further I fell down the rabbit hole.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBehind those playing cards was an entire fractured cosmology. Over 300 million people speak Slavic languages today, and their ancestors built a world most of us have never heard of — three realms connected by a World Tree, a thunder god locked in eternal battle with the lord of the underworld, household spirits living behind every stove, drowned women rising from rivers in summer. But the old religion was wiped out before anyone wrote it down. What survived came in fragments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFolklore passed down through grandmothers. Fairy tales that kept the figures alive even when their names were half-forgotten. Ivanushka the Fool, who succeeds where his clever brothers fail. Baba Yaga, who might eat you or save you depending on how you approach her. The firebird, whose single feather can light up a room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe more I read, the more I saw tarot in all of it. Ivanushka the Fool. Baba Yaga the Hermit. Marzanna the Death card. It lined up so perfectly it felt like the deck was already there, waiting to be made.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo I made it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut to make sure this deck was rooted in genuine cultural understanding, I knew its visual soul had to come from within the Slavic world itself. Our lead illustrator, \u003cspan class=\"bold\"\u003eMiloš\u003c\/span\u003e, is from Serbia. Our cover designer, \u003cspan class=\"bold\"\u003eMarta\u003c\/span\u003e, is from Poland. They shaped the look, the tone, the way each figure feels when you see it for the first time. And alongside them, our colorist \u003cspan class=\"bold\"\u003eZied\u003c\/span\u003e from Tunisia and card back designer \u003cspan class=\"bold\"\u003eSaktiawn\u003c\/span\u003e from Indonesia helped bring it all to life. Together, they took those fragmented myths and made them real.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat you're holding when you hold this deck started with a kitchen table in Kyiv and a grandmother who knew things she shouldn't have known.
